Bedford Hill runs the length of this district and takes most of the punishment with it. It is a long, busy, resurfaced-in-patches road with parking on both sides and buses squeezing past, which is a reliable recipe for kerbed alloys and pinched sidewalls. Balham itself is dense terraced housing with almost no off-street parking, so nearly everything we do here is done at the kerb, in a permit bay, with the traffic still moving past.

Balham has controlled parking across most of the district and a van needs a legal length of kerb rather than a bay, so the nearest junction or a spot a few doors down is often the practical answer. Around Clapham South the common edge gives more room and better light, and if the car can be moved that far safely, it is usually worth it.
